This Week’s Best In Beta: Rex – You’ll Never Have To Wait At The Pharmacy For A Prescription

This Week’s Best In Beta

Which startup is going to be the next big thing? Investors, bloggers, job seekers, and inspiring entrepreneurs everywhere are dying to know. Hundreds of startups enter private beta each month, and that’s far too many for any one person to keep up with. Fret not! Each week, I share some of the hottest new startups in this column, Best In Beta. Let’s discover the next big thing together!

Go to the doctor, receive a prescription, go to the pharmacy, wait for prescription to be filled or return later when it’s ready… What’s wrong with the traditional way of getting a prescription filled?

Everything.

What a slow and agonizing process, the last thing that anyone who’s ill needs to go through. Not to mention, keeping a bunch of sick people hanging around in public places? Just dumb. We can and we should do better.

Here’s a start. Rex intends to deliver medication the same day you submit a prescription, free of charge (at least while the company is in beta.) No repetitious and annoying filling out of forms, no waiting around for prescriptions to be filled when you should be home resting.

Instead, Rex comes through with secure delivery of medicines within two hours of the pharmacy filling the script. Bravo. Yes, there are restrictions as to what kind of medicines may be delivered. No, it’s not a 24-hr deal yet, so you’ll have to wait till morning or find a different pharmacy if you need a prescription filled late night. Rex isn’t a perfect solution, but it’s in beta, and – as we’re fond of saying about startups – it addresses a pain point in the healthcare system that seems medieval given the tech at our disposal.

What Rex has already figured out well is automating refills, so no one has to worry about forgetting to refill a script or repeat hassles in order to accomplish what should be obvious and simple.

With Rex, patients submit their info, choose a pharmacy, finalize delivery and they’re done, hastening recovery while eliminating unnecessary mental and physical stress.

Those frigid waiting spaces full of people struggling to keep it together, so close but still so miserably far away from the medicines they need – good riddance. No one will miss them. No one.

In a society where it’s possible to have more or less anything delivered to your house, perhaps by drone in the near future, it’s crazy that it’s taken so long for us to figure out how to have medicine delivered more easily. Good job, Rex, working to right this embarrassing oversight.

Have your prescriptions filled and delivered (if you have an iOS device and live in the Bay area, for now) by downloading rex at the App Store or rexdelivery.com.
