Spotify Family Users Can Get a Free Google Home Mini

Spotify has teamed up with Google to get Google Home (our Google Home review) in more, well, homes. For a limited time only, Spotify Premium for Family subscribers can get a free Google Home Mini speaker as part of their existing Spotify subscription.

How to Get a Free Google Home Mini From Spotify

To get your free Google Home Mini from Spotify, you need to be the master account holder for an existing Spotify Premium for Family subscription. You also have to be located in the U.S., so all of Spotify’s international subscribers are out of luck.

If you’re eligible, you just need to head to spotify.com/us/family/ to claim your free Google Home Mini. The limited time offer starts on November 1, 2018, and ends on December 31, 2018. Anyone who hasn’t claimed their free Google Home Mini by then will be out of luck.

Announcing the promotion on the Spotify Blog, Alex Norström, Chief Premium Business Officer, said:

“We’re excited to be partnering with Google Home to bring the magic of voice to our Spotify Premium Family subscribers. After all, what’s more fun than sharing the music you love with the people you love. For Family Plan subscribers, enjoying those moments will only get better. Now anytime their favorite artists comes up, they can simply say ‘Hey Google, turn it up!'”

Spotify Premium for Family costs $14.99/month and allows up to six people in one family to enjoy Spotify Premium. Google Home Mini, which is, as its name suggests, the miniature version of the Google Home smart speaker, currently retails as $49.

Google Chooses Spotify Over the Competition

This promotion is great for Spotify Family subscribers. However, it’s not so good for Google Play Music and YouTube Music, which are both competition for Spotify. Still, this is Spotify and Google teaming up to head off both Apple and Amazon, which is understandable.

All of the major music streaming services offer family plans, as well as some video streaming services. So we compiled a list of the best streaming services that offer family plans. But a free Google Home Mini certainly makes Spotify Family more appealing.

External Drive Not Recognized? How to Fix It in Windows

Removable disk drives—either USB flash drives or external hard drives—should be easy to use. But in some cases, you may connect your drive to a Windows PC or another device with a USB port and find the hard drive isn’t showing up.

This problem has several possible causes: partition issues on the external drive, using the wrong file system, dead USB ports, or driver issues in Windows. In a worst-case scenario, the drive itself may be dead.

Let’s take a look at how to diagnose undetected external drives in Windows. Note that this guide is also available as a video:

Step 0: Make Sure Your Drive Powers On

This is a preliminary step, but one worth checking. Nearly every flash drive and many external hard drives don’t require a separate power source—they receive power over USB. However, some desktop external drives do have dedicated power cables, or at least a physical power switch.

If this is the case for you and your external hard drive is not showing up, you could have an issue with the power cable. Try plugging it into another power outlet, or swap the cable if possible. Check for flashing lights on the unit that indicate activity before moving on.

Step 1: Check the Drive in Disk Management

First, let’s check whether Windows detects the drive when you plug it in. Plug your removable drive into your computer if it isn’t already.

Next, open the Disk Management tool. To do so, press Windows Key + X (or right-click the Start button) to open the Power User menu and select Disk Management from the list. You can also open the Run dialog with Windows + R and enter diskmgmt.msc to open this utility.

Windows Open Disk Manager

As the name suggests, Disk Management lets you see all the hard disks connected to your computer. You can review sizes, partitions, and other disk information.

You should see your external drive listed in the Disk Management window, likely below your primary and any secondary disks. Even if it doesn’t appear in the This PC window because it doesn’t contain any partitions, it should show up here as Removable.

Windows Disk Management Removable Disk

If you do see the drive here, jump down to section four, “Create a New Volume and Assign a Drive Letter.” There, you’ll partition and/or format it properly so Windows and other devices can access it.

If your external drive is still not showing up, continue on. You’ll need to determine why your drive isn’t recognized. It’s possible you have a hardware issue, driver problem, or a dead drive.

Step 2: Try Another USB Port and Computer

The problem may not lie with your device, but the port you’re using to connect it to your computer.

Unplug the drive from its current USB port and try plugging it into another port on your computer. If it works in one USB port but not another, you may have a dead USB port.

If you’ve plugged the drive into a USB hub, try connecting it directly to the computer instead. Some USB hubs don’t provide enough power for your external drive to function.

What if the drive doesn’t show up in Disk Management even after trying both of these steps? It’s tough to know for certain whether the drive is bad or your computer is having a problem. If you have another computer nearby, try plugging the drive into it to check whether it’s detected.

If the drive doesn’t work on any computer you plug it into, the drive itself is likely dead and you’ll need to replace it. When you try another machine, be sure to check whether it appears in the computer’s Disk Management window, not just This PC, as discussed above.

Step 3: Troubleshoot Driver Issues

If the drive does show up on other computers—or you don’t have another computer around to check—Windows may have a driver problem with your device. You can check for this using the Device Manager.

You’ll find a shortcut to the Device Manager under the same Windows + X menu mentioned earlier. You can also enter devmgmt.msc into the Run dialog to open it.

Expand the Disk drives category and check for any devices with a yellow exclamation point next to them. If you see a this symbol, that device has a driver problem.

Right-click the device with the issue, select Properties, and look at the error message. This error message can help you fix the problem; you may want to perform a Google search for the error message you find.

Windows Device Manager Disk Drives

Driver problems are often tricky to fix. If the problem started recently, try running System Restore to roll back the changes.

If this doesn’t work, you can try the Update Driver button to install an updated driver. However, this rarely finds a new driver for generic devices like flash drives. Instead, you may want to check the manufacturer’s website for a specific driver for your external hard drive.

The Driver menu for your drive in the Device Manager has a few other options. Roll Back Driver button will revert any recent driver updates, which probably won’t have an effect if System Restore didn’t work.

As a final resort, use the Uninstall button to remove the device from your system. Hopefully, upon rebooting, Windows will reinstall the driver and configure it correctly when you reconnect the drive.

Windows Device Manager Device Options

Step 4: Create a New Drive Volume

If your device showed up in Disk Management in Step 1 or one of the above troubleshooting steps made it show up, you’re ready to initialize the drive so it’s usable. Aside from showing you basic information, the Disk Management tool can fix partition and file system issues with your drive.

If your removable drive shows only Unallocated space, you’ll need to create a new partition on it. This allows Windows and other operating systems to use it. To do so, right-click anywhere on the Unallocated space, select New Simple Volume, and go through the wizard to create a new partition.

Windows Disk Management New Simple Volume

If your drive is partitioned (meaning it doesn’t have Unallocated space) and you still can’t see it, ensure it has a drive letter set. This should happen automatically, but if you’ve manually removed the drive letter, the drive may not be accessible in Windows.

To change the drive letter, right-click the removable drive’s partition and select Change Drive Letter and Paths. If the device doesn’t already have a letter, click Add and choose one. If it does, click Change and try another one.

Something later in the alphabet, like G or J, is standard for removable drives and will work fine.

Windows Disk Management Assign Drive Letter

Step 5: Format the Drive

If the drive appears partitioned, but you still can’t access it, it’s probably partitioned with a different file system.

For instance, you may have formatted the drive with the XFS file system from Linux or APFS on a Mac. Windows can’t read these file systems. You’ll thus need to reformat the drive with the newer NTFS or older FAT32 file system so Windows will be able to recognize it.

To reformat a partition in the Disk Management utility, right-click it and select Format.

Windows Disk Management Format Device

Note that formatting will erase all files on your drive, so you should copy any important files on it to another device before continuing. If you formatted the drive on a Linux or Mac machine, take it to a computer running that OS and back up the files before you format it.

When you format, you can give the drive a new name if you like. Leave Allocation unit size as Default; leaving Perform a quick format checked is fine too. More importantly, you’ll need to select a file system. Which one you should choose depends on the type of drive and what you use it for.

format-removable-drive-as-fat32

If you have a small flash drive, it likely came formatted as FAT32. In most cases, this is the best choice. While FAT32 can’t save files over 4GB and only supports volumes up to 2TB, it’s unlikely you’ll run into either of these issues using a flash drive. More importantly, FAT32 is compatible with all sorts of devices, such as cameras, media players, game consoles, and more.

NTFS is the modern standard for Windows, but there’s really nothing to gain by using it on a flash drive. Many older devices aren’t compatible with NTFS. Thus, we recommend formatting as FAT32 for flash drives and SD cards, and NTFS for large external hard drives.

You do have two other file system options. exFAT is a Microsoft file system that supports larger files that FAT32, but isn’t as widely compatible. We’ve compared FAT32 and exFAT if you’re interested. FAT is ancient, so you can ignore that one.

Your External Drive, Fixed and Recognized Again

Following this process when external hard drives don’t show up should solve most of the disk recognition issues you’ll encounter. If you’ve tried the drive with multiple computers and it never shows up in the Disk Management window after these steps, the drive is probably dead.

In that case, check out the best portable hard drives you can buy. Just make sure you know the important information about buying a hard drive.

5 Signs You Shouldn’t Date That Guy You Met On the Internet

online-date-man

“Good night, sweet angel,” he texts you, just before you turn off your phone for the night. You’ve found Mr. Perfect. Sure, he’s an online boyfriend who lives halfway across the world, but he’s the best guy who’s ever come into your life.

Or is he?

Online Dating Is More Popular Than Ever Before

More and more people are meeting their significant other online these days. This is probably due to the number of dating sites and dating apps available, which makes it much easier to find your potential happy ever after.

However, with that increased use of online dating comes an increased risk that you’ll come across a shady character who is not exactly what he makes himself out to be.

Not every guy you meet online will be a player. In fact, some great guys are just so shy that finding a date online is a necessity.

Many very nice guys are just painfully shy when meeting new people. In some cases this borders on clinical social anxiety disorder. There are some tips for talking to strangers, but dating is something else altogether.

However, when they have an opportunity to introduce themselves to a girl through the safety of the internet, those girls get to know their personality first, making the first date go more smoothly.

guy at the computer

Unfortunately, through a combination of hormones and immaturity, there are some guys who transform the system into one where they try to convince just about any girl to go on a date with them. This has led to a situation where the different sexes have different experiences of online dating.

Here are the red flags you should keep an eye out for to spot a guy who’s trying to pull a fast one on you. The following tips are some of the techniques online “players” use. Study them, and when you spot them, keep your guard up.

1. He’s Funny and Oh So Poetic

Most girls seem to love a guy with a good sense of humor. For those individuals, all it takes is a witty remark or flirty jesting to make a girl smile and break down those defensive shields around her heart.

This is difficult to accomplish in person, because it requires quick thinking and perfect timing. However, in a message on a dating app, a guy can think for several minutes before typing a reply.

Or he can even use Google, possibly to look up lines from romantic movies perfect to Netflix and chill, or very obscure, romantic poems to quote from.

How to spot him: Every joke he makes is extremely funny. He never misses an opportunity to show off his wit, but his responses are rarely quick. Seriously, time him. You’ll see.

2. He Talks About His Sister/Niece/Puppy All the Time

Animals are well known for attracting potential dates. Walk a puppy across a college campus, and you’ll see what we mean.

guy with a dog

Why is this the case? Well, any guy who can express his love for a puppy becomes more attractive to some women (especially women dreaming about starting a family).

John Grogan, the author of Marley & Me, explained that after he wrote his book, he was suddenly approached by the sort of women who never would have given him a second glance before. In an op-ed on Men’s Health, Grogan wrote:

“…it’s all about the dog—and what that tells women: A man who can love, and be loved by, a dog is a man they can trust, a man with good odds of being decent and sincere and in touch with the soft center beneath the hardened shell.”

A player knows that this is a weakness nearly all women have. An online player manipulates that weakness skillfully. He’ll often describe how close he is to his dog, his little sister, or his young niece.

Hot to spot him: When the subject often returns to one of these hot topics, it means he’s constantly probing for your weak spot. If he does it too often, you’ve got an online player on your hands.

3. He Gets You Coming and Going

There is a quote from The Great Hand Book of Quotes, that states:

“Plant a good seed in people who have fertile hearts. When you are away, they’ll miss you. When you are coming again, they can’t wait!”

Every male player knows that the only way to grow the tree of desire in your heart is to plant a seed and water it often.

How this plays out online takes time and dedication. He’ll text you first thing in the morning so that he’s the first thing you think about. He’ll text you a sweet “good night” message just before you go to sleep so he’s the last thing you think about.

girl smiling while using her phone

He may even be so clever as to learn your work schedule through conversation, and text you the moment you get home.

If done in a way that isn’t too intrusive in your schedule, this online personality will ease his way into every aspect of your day – even your lunch break and your train ride home.

Hot to spot him: Impeccable timing with messages. Short messages throughout the day. He may even drag you into all-night texting sessions.

4. He’s Done Everything

You mention rock climbing. He claims he’s a repelling expert, with hairraising stories to boot. You mention you’ve taken some photography classes, and he announces he’s an expert photographer with $15,000 worth of camera equipment.

You name it, he’s done it.

arrogant guy

The rule of thumb is if he sounds too good to be true—if every one of your interests seem to mesh so perfectly into his—it’s probably not true.

Reality is usually far from perfect. Some core interests may align, but not usually all. And if he’s only 20- or 30-something, the odds are also pretty good he hasn’t had time to become an “expert” in that many things.

Hot to spot him: The “player” technique here is called “mirroring”. The online player is skilled at recognizing your “likes” and making sure to convince you that he has a lot to offer you in all of those areas.

5. He Uses Sexual Innuendo

The last move a guy usually makes while chatting with you online will be the sexual innuendo.

This will come at a point in the conversation where he believes you’ve developed a certain level of trust and attraction to him. It’ll usually start off small:

Man: “What what are you up to?”
Woman: “Oh, just laying in bed watching TV.”
Man: “Ooooh, what are you wearing? ;-)”

It’s written humorously, but it’s a passive way to test the waters to see if you’re potentially open to having more intimate or risque conversations.

Hot to spot him: The skilled “player” uses very subtle flirtations, first dipping his toes into your pool and checking to see if the water is warm. This can be a normal behavior in many relationships, but if it happens too often (and too early) then you know there’s a problem.

There’s Nothing Wrong With Online Dating

The idea here isn’t to make you mistrust every single guy you meet online. There are a lot of wonderful men out there looking for love, just like you are.

These tips are offered only to help you identify and avoid the players. There’s nothing wrong with online dating, but there’s no place for naivety when you’re opening your heart to a stranger.

If you’re younger, one way to stay safe is use free dating apps for young adults. And if you really want to improve your odds of landing a great catch, why not try dating a programmer!

How to Delete Your Microsoft Account & Create a Local Windows 10 Login

windows-local-account

You can argue that Windows 10 is better when you’re using it in conjunction with a Microsoft Account. It means you can sync your data and settings, install apps across multiple devices, and automatically sign in to apps and services that use a Windows ID for authentication.

That said, some people are uncomfortable with using a Microsoft Account to log into their machines. Whether it’s concerns over security, worries about how Windows handles private data, or a simple yearning for the olden days, some users feel happier using a local account.

In this article, we look at how to totally delete your Microsoft Account and how to make a local account on a Windows 10 machine.

How Do You Get a Windows Account?

Lots of people will have a Windows Account without even realizing it. In fact, if you’ve ever had a Hotmail email address, an Xbox Live account, a .NET Passport, or used some other Microsoft service, the chances are you’ve got one.

Note: Hotmail is now dead. Microsoft’s email services are all under the Outlook umbrella.

It is the latest incarnation of Windows Live ID, with the rebranding occurring around the time of Windows 8’s release in late 2012. It now provides a single sign-on for most of Microsoft’s services, including Outlook, Bing, Office 365, Skype, and OneDrive.

Replace, Remove, and Delete Your Microsoft Account

Getting rid of your Microsoft Account is a three-step process. Firstly, you need to create a local account to log into Windows. Secondly, you’ll have to remove your Microsoft Account from Windows 10, then finally, you can go ahead and delete the account itself off Microsoft’s servers.

Before you start, be aware that although you can re-add your account to a computer, once it’s deleted online there is no return—your data will be lost forever.

Step 1: Create a Local Account

You cannot delete an account from your machine while you are signed into it—you’ll need to create an alternative login with a local account first.

To do that, access the Settings menu; you can find it in the Start Menu or by pressing Windows + I.

Next, navigate to the Accounts page. Once there, make sure you’re on the Your info tab. Here you will see the option to Sign in with a local account instead underneath your name.

windows sign in with a local account settings menu

Click it, and follow the on-screen instructions.

windows-10-sign-in-local-account confirmation

Step 2: Remove the Microsoft Account Login

After you’ve set up the new local account, you need to navigate to Settings > Accounts > Email and app accounts. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and highlight your Microsoft Account in the Accounts used by other apps section.

You’ll be presented with two options—Manage and Remove. “Manage” is essentially a shortcut to Microsoft’s online account management portal. You need to choose “Remove” and follow the remaining on-screen instructions.

Step 3: Delete Your Microsoft Account

Now that you’ve successfully removed the account from your machine, you can go ahead and delete it from Microsoft’s database. This will ensure that none of your data is used by the company without your consent, and will prevent it being harvested by an unapproved third-party without you being aware.

Before proceeding, make sure you’ve done some basic housekeeping by deleting any credit card details you might have saved in the Windows Store, erasing all your emails (and get to inbox zero!) and emptying the trash, removing any sensitive data from OneDrive, and backing up any important files.

Once you’re sure that you are ready to proceed, navigate to login.live.com in your web browser and enter your login credentials.

You’ll be presented with your account’s welcome page. You need to navigate to the Security tab along the top of the screen, then click on More security options at the bottom of the page.

Finally, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and click on Close my account. You’ll be presented with a warning screen that highlights some additional steps you should take before you make the plunge. Click Next.

close microsoft account screen

You’ll then be shown one final screen. Tick all the checkboxes to confirm that you understand and agree that a host of services will be deleted and lost, select the reason for the closure from the drop-down menu, then click Mark account for closure.

You will notice that you still get 60 days of grace. If you change your mind at any time during the grace period you can reactivate your account by logging back in and answering some security questions. If the 60 days lapses, your account is gone for good.

Note: The Settings app is a powerful tool. We’ve covered some of its most recent changes if you want to find out more.

Which Type of Windows Account Do You Use?

How do you use your Windows 10 machine? Are you running a local account, or do you prefer to use a Windows Account? You can let us know in the comments section.

Another way to quickly download the app is using the Siri Remote. As we detail in our Siri Remote tips and tricks, the remote allows you to navigate the UI quickly and easily with a small touchpad and even with your voice.

Amazon Prime Video App Download

Using the remote, hold down the microphone button and then say “Amazon Prime Video.” The app page will then appear on the screen. Just use the touchpad on the remote to download the app.

3. Open the Amazon Prime Video App

After opening the app, there are two different ways to sign in with an Amazon Prime account. First, you can enter the complete email and password information using a Siri Remote. It’s also possible to register the Apple TV on the Amazon site and then input a quick numerical code in the app.

Once you have completed this step, you can start watching any content available. Just to note, you can browse content without signing in. That can give you a better idea if you want to subscribe to the streaming service before handing over any money or even starting a free trial.

Amazon Prime Video App Main

The app is easy to navigate with the Siri Remote. On the main navigation bar is a search bar to find specific content. There are also sub-sections to view TV shows, movies, Amazon Originals, and content for kids.

In the main section, you can also access any Amazon Prime Video channels. Those are additional premium options, like Showtime, that you can subscribe to via Amazon.

Viewers can also take a look at movies or TV shows they’ve been watching and jump right back in where they left off.

If you have an Apple TV 4K, there is also a specific section highlighting 4K shows and movies available to watch. The newest Apple TV also supports Dolby Atmos playback from Amazon Prime Video. So, using a compatible Dolby Atmos sound system, which includes our favorite Dolby Atmos soundbars, you can add another layer to your viewing experience.

Other Ways to Watch Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV

Amazon Prime TV Airplay

As long as you have an iPhone or iPad handy, you don’t even need to install the Amazon Prime Video app on your Apple TV to watch the streaming service on a big screen.

First, you’ll need to make sure that your iOS device and Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. Open up the Amazon Prime Video app on an iPhone or iPad and start playing your content. In the upper right-hand portion of the screen, select the AirPlay logo. Then choose the Apple TV you want to play the video on.

Instead of the Siri Remote, you’ll have to rewind and fast forward using the iOS device screen. But to conserve battery power, the video will keep playing even if the iPhone or iPad is locked with the screen off.

You can also use AirPlay to watch Amazon Prime Video from any Mac on the Apple TV. The AirPlay logo is located in the Mac’s menu bar. Find the Apple TV you want to send the video to and enjoy.

Let the Binge Watching Begin!

Streaming services can bring a unique and exciting blend of movies and TV shows into your home at the touch of the button. They have changed the entertainment landscape for the better as they continue to evolve.

And by using the Amazon Prime Video app on the Apple TV, you can watch all the content the service has to offer in the comfort of your living room and on your big screen television.

Now you just need to find the right content. So if you want to dive right into watching Amazon Prime Video on your Apple TV, take a look at the best movies to watch on Amazon Prime.

What Are Facebook Shadow Profiles?

facebook-shadow-profiles

Facebook spends an awful amount of time defending its data practices. The social network’s hunger for users’ personal information has led to it adopting any means necessary for harvesting as much data as possible.

This means that even if you never sign up to Facebook, the social network will have some information on you. And it’s all thanks to shadow profiles. But what are Facebook shadow profiles? And do you have one? Read on to find out…

What Are Shadow Profiles and Do You Have One?

Facebook Call Logs

To understand what shadow profiles are, consider this analogy. Say there are two friends, Becky and John. Neither of them are on Facebook.

But Becky gives in and signs up. She creates an account, installs the app, and gets to work building her profile. While setting up, Facebook asks if Becky would like to provide her contacts to help Facebook locate her existing friends on the website. Becky thinks it’s a great way to kickstart her life on Facebook and grants Facebook permission.

As soon as she does so, Facebook combs through Becky’s contacts and scoops all the available information such as phone numbers, email addresses, and other data.

This enables Facebook to figure out the Facebook users Becky might know already. It uses this data to populate the “People You May Know” feature, helping Becky quickly and easily add friends to her social network.

While this may sound harmless enough, while gathering data from Becky’s phone, Facebook’s algorithms also collect details on some of her friends who don’t have a Facebook account.

Facebook takes this opportunity to build profiles based on the preliminary data it has acquired. This includes a name, phone number, email address, and more besides. Hence, even if you’ve never signed up for Facebook, the company could have your information on file, and a rudimentary sense of who you are.

To know more about what data Facebook has collected, here’s how to find out what Facebook knows about you.

This bank of data comes in handy later when Becky convinces John to join Facebook as well. As soon as he does that, Facebook is already aware of which profiles to recommend to John.

And that’s just one source of John’s shadow profile. Hundreds of people, irrespective of their relationship with John, might have signed up for Facebook and allowed it to access their contacts list.

Has Facebook Disclosed These Activities?

Facebook Data Policy

Yes, Facebook has updated its Privacy Policy for reflecting the fact that it does use local information from phones.

Under Networks and Connections, you will find an excerpt that says “We also collect contact information if you choose to upload, sync or import it from a device (such as an address book or call log or SMS log history), which we use for things like helping you and others find people you may know and for the other purposes listed below.”

Plus, there’s another section called “Things others do and information they provide about you” that states “We also receive and analyze content, communications, and information that other people provide when they use our Products. This can include information about you, such as when others share or comment on a photo of you, send a message to you, or upload, sync or import your contact information.”

The last part which reads “sync or import your contact information” directly points at shadow profiles and how Facebook uses the information it collects.

Is There Anything You Can Do About It?

Unfortunately, you don’t have any direct control over shadow profiles. Whenever a Facebook user who has you as a contact on their phone signs up to Facebook, your personal information will be added to your shadow profile.

Therefore, unless you’re comfortable with switching to a new phone number and email address, you can not do anything about your shadow profile.

Facebook Delete Contacts, Call Logs

You can also request your friends who actively use Facebook to delete the contacts they’ve uploaded. They can do so by heading over to the Manage Contacts page on Facebook. Of course, they will have to keep the sync settings turned off after this. Unfortunately, this is not really practical since you’ll have to ask everyone you know who is on Facebook and has your contact details to follow the procedure.

If you do end up getting a new phone number and email address, the best thing then is to not give it out to everyone. Only to people who you know understand personal security and are understand Facebook’s privacy settings. And before you even consider that you should read our guide to Facebook Privacy so you too understand what’s going on.

Will Facebook Ever Backtrack on Shadow Profiles?

We suspect Facebook will never give up on shadow profiles, as, even after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, shadow profiles still exist.

Facebook clearly believes they’re crucial for the social network so that no one feels lost when they sign up for the first time. It is undoubtedly a matter of worry, and the weakest link in Facebook’s defense of your private data.

All you can do is educate yourself. So, read up on how to limit how much of your personal data is being shared or perhaps consider switching to one of these Facebook alternatives which don’t steal your data.

Apple Unveils a New MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and iPad Pro

Apple has hosted yet another “special event”, six weeks after the last one. In September, Apple unveiled the new iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and iPhone XR. Now, one month on, Apple has unveiled slightly upgraded versions of the MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and iPad Pro.

Apple Announces New Old Products

The New MacBook Air

Apple has finally updated the MacBook Air for the first time since 2015. The new MacBook Air has a Retina display on a 13.3-inch screen, thinner bezels, two USB-C ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. At 2.75 pounds, it’s also slightly lighter than the previous model.

Unfortunately, there’s no Touch Bar, USB-A ports, or SD card reader. There are various versions available, with the base model boasting 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. For that you’ll pay $1,199, with the new MacBook Air available to buy from November 7.

The New Mac Mini

Apple has also updated the Mac Mini for the first time since 2014. The new Mac Mini boasts a quad-core 8th Gen Intel processor and up to 64GB of RAM and up to 2TB SSD storage. You get a generous four USB-C ports, plus USB-A ports, HDMI, and Ethernet.

The new Mac Mini actually looks very similar to the old Mac Mini, but the changes have all been made under the hood. The base model includes an Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB of SSD storage. That will set you back $799 and be available from November 7.

The New iPad Pro

Last but not least is the new iPad Pro. This has been redesigned inside and out. Design-wise, the new iPad Pro has smaller bezels and a screen which run closer to the edge. Apple has also added Face ID, but removed the Home button and the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The new iPad Pro boasts impressive specs. It’s powered by the A12X Bionic chip, which has an 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU which Apple claims compares to an Xbox One. The 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799, with the 12.9-inch base model priced at $999.

But Where Are the New NEW Products?

This is the fourth special event Apple has hosted in 2018. However, they’ve all been about introducing slightly better versions of existing products, including the iPhone, the iPad, the Apple Watch, and operating systems for all of the above and more besides.

But where are the brand new, never-seen-before products that once helped Apple stand out from the crowd? And why aren’t more Apple fans calling out the company for playing it safe? Unfortunately, this is what happens when you’re worth $1 trillion and counting.

5 Critical eBay Online Shopping Tips You Must Know

ebay-shopping

Welcome to eBay Online Shopping 101. You are the select few, chosen to be trained as sharp-shooting eBay bidders, capable of finding the best deals and winning every auction. So pull up a chair and let’s get started.

Shopping on eBay isn’t really like shopping on Amazon or any other shopping site. On most sites, you search for the product you like, find it, and if there are enough left, you buy it at the best fixed price you can find and then wait for it to arrive in the mail. On eBay, not so much.

Is eBay Safe?

There are a few important things you need to know when you buy something on eBay.

It’s important to do your research before you ever press the Place bid button.

  • End of the auction timing
  • Seller details
  • Product details

eBay is a great place to buy some really cool stuff at amazing prices, but you’ve got to be careful.

When it comes to eBay online shopping, in most cases you aren’t dealing with a major business with a reputation and a brand to protect. You’re usually dealing with someone selling stuff right out of their own home.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but it means that you have to go about doing business a little more carefully.

Searching for Things to Buy on eBay

Lesson number one is this—you really shouldn’t bid on just anything on eBay.

If you do, you’re far more likely to lose your money and not get the product that you want. On the other hand, if you search carefully for products, you’ll have very low odds of ever losing your money, getting a bad deal, or or even getting scammed on eBay.

When you’re searching for what you want, listings have options at the top to switch between listing type. “All Listings”, “Accepts Offers”, “Auction”, or “Buy It Now”.

  • All Listings: No filter is applied and you’ll see a mix of auction-style and buy-it-now listings.
  • Auction: Most people prefer straight auction sales because you can get much better deals.
  • Buy It Now: If you’re in a hurry and want more of an Amazon experience, then you can go with a “Buy It Now” sale.
  • Accepts Offers: This will show listings where the seller is willing to entertain offers lower than the current listing price.

ebay online shopping types of listings

Pro-tip #1: If you are a collector and find yourself searching for the same sorts of items on eBay over and over, you can click on “Save this search” as a convenient way to quickly see new items that show up.

Pro-tip #2: If you’re new to eBay, sorting by Time: ending soonest or Ending Soon is one of the best ways to get the lowest price. This depends on the time of day you’re able to do the search. There are prime hours to be a buyer when prices are lowest. In the left navigation, click on Completed Items under Show only, to get an idea of what time and day of the week is the prime time for buyers.

ebay items ending soonest

Once you sort the items by when they are ending, it’s time to scroll down the list and find the item you want that’s about to end in just a few minutes—or up to 30 minutes from now.

Waiting 30 minutes to bid on something isn’t such a bad thing if you get a smoking deal out of the wait.

Advanced eBay Search Tips

Using eBay’s advanced search is the best tool in your arsenal for finding the best deals when you’re shopping online at eBay. Hit the Advanced link next to the search box to get started.

ebay advanced search

Here, you’ll see the sorts of things you’d expect: a search field, search terms to exclude (which is good if you’re looking for something very specific), the option to include searching descriptions as well as titles (do this!), different buying formats, and so on.

Use as many of these options as you need to find the exact listings you’re looking for.

advanced search

Some of the most useful options in the advanced search are:

  • Search including title and description
  • Condition
  • Listings ending within [time]
  • Best offer
  • Free shipping

Which ones you select will depend on how specific you want your search to be.

One more quick search tip has to do with categories. When you search for an item, eBay automatically selects and searches a specific category.

When I searched for Fury of Dracula, a board game, eBay selects “Board games > Contemporary manufacture”.

Be sure to set this drop-down to “All categories” to find items that have been listed in the wrong category, as they might have better prices.

Once you find the item that you want, then it’s time to move on to the next phase of your research before you place a bid.

Researching the Seller on eBay

Pro-tip #3: When you find the perfect item, don’t just bid on it immediately.

You need to do your homework or else you’ll end up in a bad situation. Make sure you know everything there is to know about the seller.

See the seller information just off to the right of the “Current Bid:” area of the auction.

ebay seller info

Make sure you pick an item with at least 15 minutes or so remaining so you have the time to do your seller and item research.

First, click on the number next to the seller name. That’ll take you to the seller feedback page.

ebay seller ratings

I know a lot of people who are heavy into eBay online shopping who only buy from sellers that have 100% feedback rating for the last 12 months. That might give you nearly perfect odds to never have any issues with anything you purchase on eBay, but it can also really limit what you can bid on.

The truth is, there are a whole lot of fantastic sellers who, through no fault on their part, ended up getting negative feedback from bad buyers.

You can identify patterns like this pretty quickly when you examine the feedback ratings for buyers, which are broken up into 1 month, 6 month and 12 month sections. For example, this buyer had only two negative feedback ratings within the last 12 months.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to scroll down and see what those were all about. In this example, it looks like the feedback ranking for this particular seller is pretty stellar despite the fact that the overall rank score is 99.6%.

ebay seller feedback

Given the overwhelming number of positive feedback rankings, I think it’s safe to say that this particular negative score was probably the fault of the buyer, not the seller.

Researching the Item on eBay

Once you’re satisfied with the seller, it’s time to research the item.

Pro-tip #4: Don’t just scan the item quickly, because there may be some details about the item that you want to know about before you buy it. Remember, this is likely someone selling a used item right from their home—so it’s probably not going to be perfect. Make sure you know about every imperfection.

Most good sellers will make sure to note any imperfection.

Another important factor to check is the shipping. You’ll find this when you scroll down to the description area. Just click on the Shipping and Payments tab.

Different sellers have different methods of shipping—and sometimes they might actually overcharge.

ebay shipping

Beyond the shipping cost, check out where the item location is (at the top of the shipping page) so you have some realistic idea of how long it’ll take to get to you.

You’ll also want to scroll down a little further to Payment Details.  Make sure the seller accepts the form of payment you want to use.

How to Snipe on eBay and Win Every Time

Pro-tip #5: If you bid in a certain way, you’re nearly guaranteed to win the auction.

This is especially important if the item is being closely followed by a lot of interested people, like the one shown here.

popular ebay auction

The first thing to do is make sure you’re properly logged into eBay. The last thing you want is a login-request at the last second when you want to bid.

Then, right click on the “Place bid” button and open it in a new window.

Move that window over to the side. Even better, to a different screen so you can watch the timer countdown on the item page itself.

Type in your maximum bid in the “Your max bid:” field.

your max bid

Don’t mess around here. Stretch yourself as far as you’re willing to go.

For example, in the case above, I only wanted to bid $75 at the most. Now, sure I could bid exactly $75, but if there’s anyone else looking for the laptop at the same price, they’re likely going to bid $75, $75.01, or $75.50. These are the most common ways people try to win at a certain price. To outbid all of those folks, bid $75.99. Then click Continue.

Now that you’re on the “Confirm Bid” page, it’s just time to wait for the countdown.

snipe on ebay

This is the important part, and it’s where most people freak out and bid too early.

On the very last confirmation page, you’re just one step away from officially placing your bid. Wait until the very last moment, providing only enough time for computer and Internet lag—about 3 to 4 seconds.

winning ebay auctions

When the clock clicks down under 15 seconds or less, just go ahead and click the “Confirm Bid” button. Wait for the confirmation page that you’re the winner of the auction. Congratulations!
