Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt Review

Samsung’s J series is an extremely popular budget segment with lots of devices in the J5 and J7 series. Samsung has recently announced an affordable phone in this series, the J7 Nxt. The J7 Nxt was launched in India for Rs 11,490 and competes with extremely popular Redmi Note 4 and Honor 6X. The J7 Nxt has a 5.5 inch SUPER AMOLED HD display and is powered by Exynos 7870 Octa core processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage.

So how does the Galaxy J7 Nxt perform in this segment? Let’s find out in this detailed review.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt Review

Design:

It is quite disappointing to see Samsung hasn’t done any work in terms of the design for their latest J series. The design of the J7 Nxt looks dated and has the same look of the phone released in 2015. It comes with a pattern on the rear panel which is made of plastic material and is removable. It comes with a metallic chassis, but the build quality is pretty average. The glossy finishing on the sides of the device looks a bit cheap. The phone has rounded corners and curved edges. The power key is on the right side while the volume keys are on the left. The bottom panel houses the charging slot and 3.5mm audio jack.

The front panel has the physical home button and two touch button very similar to other Samsung phones. There is 5.5 inch HD AMOLED display, front facing 5MP camera along with LED flash and usual sensors. But Samsung has not included an ambient light sensor on the device which is disappointing for a mid range phone. The touch buttons below the display are not backlit. There isn’t a drastic change in terms of the dimensions of the device. It is high time Samsung did something new for their budget devices in terms of design.

Display:

Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt comes with a 5.5 inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280X 720p. The display does not come with any protection. While the display is an AMOLED panel,  it is an HD in this price segment. Quite a lot of popular phones ship with full HD in this price segment. The display quality looks quite good and it is a vibrant and colorful display. At times you even feel the display is a bit saturated. The viewing angles are quite good and so is the touch response.

The outdoor visibility is also decent, but the most important aspect missing from the device is the light sensor. So each time you step out of your house, you need to increase the brightness slider or use the outdoor mode.

Software:

Samsung Galaxy J7 Max comes with the new UI from Samsung which was available on S8 and S8+. The new UI feels a lot better and looks fresh. It has a custom UI with the option of having multiple home screens without an app drawer or you can even switch to app drawer from the home settings. The settings panel is also has a custom UI. The notification center and quick toggles have also been changed and there is an option to change the layout of the toggles.

Screenshot_20170801-103757Screenshot_20170801-103804Screenshot_20170801-103810

The phone comes with a bunch of additional settings which includes the ability to lock and hide apps, one handed UI, multi window, quick launching camera, smart alert and more. The phone also features Dual Messenger feature which is basically the dual apps on other OEMs. Here, you can run two instances of messenger apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype etc. The list of supported apps will be available when you install the app.

Screenshot_20170801-103816Screenshot_20170801-103822Screenshot_20170801-103826

The phone also comes with a panic mode where you can make an emergency call or sent SOS. It also features Samsung’s existing options like Easy mode and support for themes, wallpapers, and icons.J7 Max also features Samsung’s security apps like S Secure and Secure folder which are found on all Samsung phones for privacy and locking apps.

Performance:

Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt is powered by the Exynos 7870 Octa Core processor and is coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Exynos 7870 is a decent mid range chipset and we have seen it on quite a few devices released in India. In day to day tasks, the device was a response and there was hardly any issues, but when you push it a bit harder with heavy tasks running in the background, you can some minor hiccups. But nevertheless, the performance was quite good on the phone. The gaming performance of the device was also good and there were no heating issues on the phone.

Screenshot_20170801-103924Screenshot_20170801-103931

The phone comes with 16GB of internal storage and you get close to 10GB of storage on first boot. There is also an option to expand the storage using the dedicated SD card slot available. The call quality of the device was good, but the speaker performance was quite average. The phone does not come with a fingerprint scanner and we feel this is a major omission for a phone in this segment. Also, the device misses out on many other sensors like Gyroscope, light sensor and also a magnetic sensor.

Screenshot_20170801-103956

Camera:

The phone packs a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and 5MP front camera for selfies, again with a flash. The camera interface is quite unchanged from what we have seen on J7 Max (review) and comes with good options like HDR, PRO mode etc. There are also a handful of filters included. The camera samples taken with the rear 13MP camera was quite disappointing with colors being washed out in most outdoor photos. The sharpness levels were also on the lower side. We have seen many good camera smartphones in this segment including the Honor 6X. The close-up photos had much better color reproduction and was quite good. The low light performance was also just average for a phone in this segment. The selfie experience was again average at its best. Here are some of the samples taken with the device.

Battery Life:

Samsung J7 Nxt packs a 3000mAh battery, it does not support any form of fast charging. The battery performance of the device was quite decent and with moderate usage, you can get through almost a day of usage easily with the screen on time of around 3- 3.5 hours. This is quite decent for a budget device.

Verdict:

Priced at Rs 11,490, the Samsung J7 Nxt doesn’t impress much with average specifications, poor camera performance, and outdated design. While the device does come with a Super AMOLED display, it is just an HD panel and comparing with the competition it falls short on many aspects like 2GB RAM and 16GB storage offered in this price segment. If you are looking for a Samsung phone in this segment, J7 Nxt makes sense, else give this device a miss, there are better alternatives available.

How to Move Folders in Windows 10 without Breaking Installation

There are many instances when you wanted to move one or more folders from one location to another due to a shortage of space, but cannot do as it will break installation of apps. If you are facing that issue, then FreeMove is a good solution to the problem. It is a free app which allows users to move folders in Windows 10 to a new drive or different locations without breaking your installations or shortcuts.

The app has a simple and easy to use interface.

Move folders in Windows 10

All you need to do is the select the directory to move using the browse option and then select the location where you want to move. When you hit the move button the folders will be moved to new location. The app takes advantage of Windows symbolic link features and creates a directory junction. Using this junction, the app makes sure that there is a link between directory and all files inside it to the new location.

This means your installations will not break even if you move because whenever the old folder is accessed.

For example, if a program installs on C:\ by default or you want to move the installation folder of a program to somewhere else without breaking it you can use this program.

How It works

  1. The files are moved to the new location
  2. A directory junction is created from the old location to the new one. This way trying to access a file from its old location will simply redirect to the new one

You should not move important system directories as they can break core functionalities like Windows Update and Windows Store Apps. For example, C:\UsersC:\Documents and SettingsC:\Program FilesC:\Program Files (x86) should not be moved as it will cause issues with system folders.

In any case you want to move back the folders to original location, you can delete the junction (this won’t delete the content) in the old position and move the directory back to its original position. The app works perfectly and you just need to run the app as administrator.

What URL Domain Extensions Stand For and Why They Are Needed

Before 1983, visiting a host on a network required typing in its IP address. The fledgling internet was much smaller, and reaching individual sites was only possible if you knew where to look. Fortunately, the Internet Engineering Task Force introduced their pioneering Domain Name System (DNS), allowing numerical IP addresses to be identified as specific domain names. Instead of having to remember a long sequence of numbers, like 69.171.234.21, you only have to remember a URL: Facebook.com. Along with the new DNS, domain extensions appeared. A domain extension is the top-level part of the domain name (TLD), such as .com,...

After Dunkirk: 12 World War II Movies to Watch on Netflix

ww2-movies

Have you watched Chris Nolan’s Dunkirk yet? It tracks the story of the Allied evacuation off the beaches of Northern France in May 1940. Of course, the Dunkirk evacuation has passed into history as one of the most important episodes of World War II. Many historians argue that it’s the point Hitler lost the war. If he’d allowed his Panzer columns to continue rather than waiting for his infantry divisions to catch up, the Allied forces would have been almost wiped out. Instead, more than 330,000 British, French, Dutch, Polish, and Belgian troops managed to escape across the English Channel....

How to Search Videos within a YouTube Channel on your Mobile Phone

YouTube, the second largest search engine after Google, offers extremely powerful search commands but there’s one important search functionality that YouTube is yet to include in its mobile app for both Android & iPhone.

You cannot search for videos within a specific YouTube channel while using YouTube on a mobile phone or tablet. For instance, if you would like to search for Tesla videos that were uploaded on the MKBHD channel, you simply can’t do that from your mobile phone.

youtube-video-search.jpg

This search-within-channel feature has been available for long on YouTube’s desktop website – see screenshot – but none of the YouTube apps have it yet. This is surprising considering the fact that more than half of video views on YouTube now come from mobile devices.

That’s where our mini YouTube search engine can help. Sign-in with your YouTube account, enter a search query, select any YouTube channel that you are subscribed to and it will show a list of all matching videos within the selected channel.

seach-youtube-channel.jpg

The app builds a list of all channels that you are currently subscribed to and prepares a nice drop-down with the channels sorted by name. The drop-down also features the channel icons so it is easier for you to find the channel you are looking for.

Also, if you have multiple YouTube accounts, you can click the “Logout” link to sign-out from the current account and log in to any other account. The app requests read-only access to your YouTube account and does not store any of your data anywhere.

If you are a desktop uses, you’ll probably never need this site but for mobile users, our mini YouTube search engine could be worth bookmarking until YouTube incorporates this missing feature to their native apps.

The 7 Best Windows File Explorer Replacements

windows-explorer-replacements

The best way to describe Windows File Explorer is “functional.” Sure, it’s got a few little settings you can tweak, and there are several tricks that’ll make it work more efficiently, but it’s still decidedly more “Volvo” than “Mercedes.” If you spend a lot of time in the app, it’s easy to become weary of its idiosyncrasies. Why can’t you integrate non-Microsoft cloud storage providers? Why can’t you reorder the main shortcuts in the left-hand panel? And why hasn’t Microsoft introduced tabbed browsing? Perhaps it’s time to dump File Explorer and use a third-party alternative? If you’ve never looked into...

Honeyfi – No Need To Fear Managing Money As A Couple

All couples must have tough discussions (if not many arguments) about money. Doesn’t matter how in love you are or how well you work together or even how much you have in the bank – the joint management of finances puts enormous pressure on couples and exposes weaknesses. If couples don’t find a way to constructively talk about and agree on finances, the relationship likely will decline or end.

Honeyfi is a free app that makes it easier to manage money as a couple. Honeyfi lets couples link bank accounts and credit cards to see what money they have together and where money is being spent. Partners can choose what to share with each other and both organize and consolidate household finances in the app. They can also comment on transactions and message their partner to better keep each other informed.

honeyfi landing

But Honeyfi does more than facilitate transparency and collaboration. Based on previous spending, Honeyfi suggests a shared budget and identifies trends. It’s helpful to have these insights come from outside the couple. It makes things less personal and gives partners a way to discuss money habits as data rather than individual behavior.

There are so many ways that money can damage a couple. If one person is good at managing money and the other isn’t, that difference can be difficult to overcome. Honeyfi prevents frustration for both types. People who are really good at budgeting – who insist on it – can get the details they need from their financially challenged half in order to make the couple financially stronger. The person who struggles with money, can help out with little or no effort and better see how improved money management benefits the couple.

It’s easy to put money management off for later in the course of a relationship, which can lead to painful realizations and conflict. Buying a house, children and their education, travel, dinner out vs. out of the kitchen – couples face constant financial decisions. Honeyfi is a great tool to align efforts and begin discussions sooner rather than later. And since financial counseling can be either expensive or intimidating, a free app is a simple, familiar and absolutely affordable resource.

Honeyfi is the product of “a group of mission-driven spouses, partners, bankers, technologists, and startup veterans,” with a simple goal: to “empower couples and families to make better financial decisions.” To learn more or get the app, visit honeyfi.com.

Really Private Browsing: An Unofficial User’s Guide to Tor

Privacy on the internet is a constantly evolving battleground. And for good reason. Revelations concerning government spying programs, almost daily data breaches, and less-than-transparent corporations are de rigueur. Tin foil hats abound; more and more citizens around the globe are taking note of their privacy… and where it is going. When Edward Snowden revealed the PRISM (NSA) and Tempora (GCHQ) global surveillance programs, shock was met with apathy. Those that suspected this level of surveillance found their suspicions vindicated. But the average man or woman on the street? Many didn’t even pause for thought. New Windows 10 Features Coming to Fall Update

Windows 10 Fall Creator’s update is one of the major upcoming updates for Windows 10 which promises to bring in more features. Microsoft has been pushing these new features to Insider builds and you can actually test it before the final update rolling out in September. With the release of build 16251 for Insiders for Windows 10, Microsoft has added some interesting features. These new Windows 10 features will be coming to fall creators update.

So, here is the list of new features.

New Windows 10 features

1. Cortana Voice commands to log out, shutdown or restart PC:

With the new build, you can use voice commands with Cortana to turn off, restart, lock, or sign-out of Windows. For some of these voice commands, such as the one for turning off your PC, Cortana may ask you for a verbal confirmation. You’ll have to respond to Cortana with a “Yes” for Cortana to complete the voice command.

Here are the commands and these will work with English as of now.

  • “Hey Cortana, restart PC.”
  • “Hey Cortana, turn off PC.”
  • “Hey Cortana, sign out.”
  • “Hey Cortana, lock PC.”

2. Improved Boot Up Experience:

You can now use sign-in info to apply settings after a restart or update, the advanced Windows Update feature to use your sign-in info to automatically finish setting your device after an update has been extended to regular reboots and shutdowns. When you log in and initiate a reboot or a shutdown through power options available on the Start Men, Windows will automatically setup your account after it has booted back up.

This will help you sign-in faster and will restore your applications and any other application that has registered for application restart.

3. Web Search Inside Cortana:

Previously when you do a web search using Cortana, it opens Edge browser to complete the search. Now you can view the results that Cortana has for you without launching the web browser. The Cortana pane will expand automatically, quickly showing you exactly what you need to know and this works with movies, celebrities, stock prices, weather, flight status, etc.

4. Link your Phone with PC:

Microsoft has announced the feature to link your phone to PC.  This build’s scenario is focused on cross-device web-browsing and it works with Android and iPhones. To use this feature, go to Settings > Phone and link your phone. Having you link your phone ensures that your sessions from your phone are continued only on to the PC that you’ve chosen.

After you’ve linked your phone, just go to your phone and start browsing the web. When you are at a website you want to view on your PC, simply invoke the native share experience on your phone and share the website to the “Continue on PC” option.
