Microsoft Launches Xbox Game Pass for Hardcore Gamers

Microsoft is launching a new subscription service called Xbox Game Pass. This is essentially like Netflix for games, with those willing to pay the monthly fee being granted access to over 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles. So it looks as though Sony finally has a fight on its hands. We’re slowly entering an age where ownership is a thing of the past. We are increasingly buying access to content instead, whether it be music (Spotify, Apple Music), or TV and movies (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video). Even books and video games are getting in on the act, and Microsoft...

7 Password Manager Superpowers You Aren’t Using

password-manager-superpowers

Passwords are the key to your digital life. Until someone comes up with a better solution, a username/password combo is all that’s keeping someone malicious out of your email, banking, and Facebook accounts. Thus, you need secure passwords to protect your information, and the best way to do that is with a password manager. It’s hard to come up with good passwords, and even tougher to remember all of them. Password managers solve this problem by saving your passwords for you and keeping them protected until you decrypt them. Beyond that basic functionality, let’s look at further features of password...

Control Raspberry Pi Remotely From Any PC or Phone With VNC

control-raspberry-remotely

Using a Raspberry Pi as a standard PC — with a monitor and keyboard — is one way of interacting with the device. But often, you may not need these items. Your USB ports may be too busy to connect a keyboard and a monitor may be too unwieldy for your project. While a compact, portable, touchscreen display is an option, you could abandon the idea of a dedicated display entirely in favor of accessing your Pi remotely. SSH is a popular means of doing this, but without additional software and configuration, this is limited to command line access. VNC is...

Google Kills Another Product You’ve Never Heard Of

Google is killing off Google Spaces, its experimental social networking/group messaging app. We’re guessing you’ve never actually heard of Google Spaces before today. Which means this news is likely to elicit nothing but a shrug of the shoulders from a select band of Google diehards. Google has a habit of killing off products and services. Google Reader is probably the most memorable, while Showtimes is the most recent. 5 Tips for Strengthening Your Personal Brand

You probably already know it’s important to have a personal brand.

Creating a personal brand that others recognize and trust is essential to success as a freelancer or as any other business owner.

Now, you’ve probably already built something of a personal brand. You probably have a branded website and all the requisite social media accounts.

So what next?

Here are five things you can do to take your brand to the next level.

1. Review Your Strengths

One of the best things you can do to keep working on your personal brand is to review your strengths. Periodically look at what you bring to the table.

Have you developed new strengths? What are your best qualities? Understanding your strengths will help you figure out how to make the most of your brand. Plus, you can highlight those strengths and play them up.

2. Understand Your Value

Now that you know your strengths, you can put them to good use. Understand your value.

How do you fit into your industry? Do your strengths lend you the ability to provide value that others can’t? You need to be clear about that.

As you strengthen your personal brand, make sure you illustrate the value you bring to the table. You want others to know what you offer. Whether it’s through a business proposition, or whether it’s freelancing, you want to make sure that you offer solid value and that you communicate that value.

3. Post Meaningfully on Social Media

You might have social media profiles, but are you doing anything meaningful with them?

As you work to strengthen your personal brand, you need to make sure that what you post online adds something to the conversation. Do you provide meaningful insights in your industry? Do you offer value? Do you share information others find useful?

These are important things to consider. If you take the time to craft thought-out online posts, you will have a better chance of creating a brand that others value and want to follow.

4. Show Authenticity

Whether you are managing a business or offering great freelance content, you need to be authentic. Your personal brand should reflect who you really are. Someone who meets you in person should feel as though the face you show online is compatible.

Be yourself.

After a while, it becomes clear when you are fake, and that can show through. People like to feel like they know you, and you can create a brand that people identify with to increase your success.

5. Tweak as Needed

Just because you want to be authentic, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t change ever. The key to a strong personal brand is the ability to adapt and tweak as needed.

Keep improving yourself. As you do so, your brand will improve as well. As you learn new skills and information, update your brand, and update your value proposition. It’s a good way to stay up to date with the latest developments. You’ll remain relevant, and continue to offer customers and clients best value.

How to Email Unique File Attachments using Mail Merge for Gmail

Mail Merge, available for Gmail and Google Inbox, is a perfect tool for sending personalized emails to one or more email addresses using a simple Google Sheet. If you never performed merge before, please watch the Mail Merge tutorial and documentation to get started.

One of the most popular features of Mail Merge is its unique ability to send different file attachments to different email address. For instance, if you are applying for a job at different companies, you can attach the same PDF resume in all email messages but the cover letter could be different with each application.

This step-by-step tutorial explains how you can you can use Mail Merge for Gmail to send unique email attachments to your contacts. Mail Merge pulls files from Google Drive and includes them as attachments in the outgoing email messages.

Step 1: Install the Mail Merge add-on.

Step 2: Open a new Google Sheet, go to Addons > Mail Merge with Attachments > Create Merge template to initialize the sheet.

Step 3: Add one or more rows in the Mail Merge sheet. To keep things simple, you can add the First Name, last Name, and the Email address as shown in the screenshot.

mail-merge-row.png

Attach Google Drive files to Mail Merge

Step 4:  Go to Addons > Mail Merge > Add File Attachments > Insert Files from Google Drive and select one or more files that you wish to send with your email message. You can also select the option Select Files from Computer if the files are on the computer.

Mail Merge will get the direct link of the selected file(s) and inserts them into the File Attachments column. If you wish to send more files with the same email message, you can add the drive links in the same cell, separated by the comma.

Easily Add File Attachments with Mail Merge

In the previous step, we used the Google File Picker to select the files from Google Drive. This is slightly tedious more so as you have to repeat the steps for every row in your Mail merge sheet.

There’s an easier way though for adding attachments to merge. Instead of using the File Picker, you can simply put the name of the file in the File Attachments column. The addon, at the time of sending the email, will search your Drive for that file and attach it to the email message.

If you have multiple files in Google Drive with the same name, you can specify the folder path where the file is located. The syntax is \\Folder A\\Folder B\\filename.ext

google-drive-file.png

I want to show you one more technique for quickly attaching files to your Mail mere sheet. Go to Addons > Mail Merge > Add File Attachments > List Files in Google Drive Folder. Now select the parent folder in your Google Drive and the addon will generate a list of every file it found inside that folder, including sub-folders.

Now switch back to the Mail Merge sheet and you’ll notice that a drop-down has been added to every cell in the File Attachments column. This makes it even easier for you to select files from Drive.

mail-merge-animated-gif.gif

So we are all set. Go to the mail merge menu, choose Configure and run merge (video) to send your emails that all have unique attachments. You’ll find a copy of the emails in your Gmail Sent items.

For detailed instructions, please watch the video tutorial.

10 Great TurboGrafx/PC Engine Games You Never Played

turbografx16-games

The TurboGrafx-16, or PC Engine as it was known in Japan, is a Japanese home console developed by electronics giant NEC and Hudson Soft. It was released in late 1987 in Japan, and two years later in the U.S. and France. Despite the success of the console in its home territory, the TG-16 wasn’t a breakout hit with western audiences. That means there are probably a whole heap of games from that era that many of us have never even heard of, let alone played. While much of the system’s catalog consisted of cross-platform releases, we’ll focus primarily on exclusives for this list. Check out...

Spotify Now Shows Music According to Weather

Years ago, Songza was my music-streaming website of choice because it had so many cool ways to discover new music: by genre, by time of day, by activity, and even by mood and weather. Music discovery engines aren’t new anymore — Spotify already offers a bunch of ways to do that — but weather-based playlists still have novelty yet. This new feature of Spotify, called Climatune, is a joint endeavor with AccuWeather to automatically play Spotify tunes based on the weather in your current location. And when I tried it, no surprise, the songs actually did match the weather quite...

6 New Features in the Nokia 3310 (2017)

If you have been an early adopter of mobile phones, you might be already knowing the hugely popular Nokia 3310 from 2000. The Nokia 3310 was one of the most selling feature phones till date and was released in 2000. It also gained popularity because of the sturdy build quality and the snake game which came bundled in the phone. Now, Nokia has re-launched the 3310 with new features, design and looks, at the Mobile World Congress 2017. While Nokia will not be looking at selling the new device in large numbers, it has gone by the public sentiment for this model.

Here are the 6 new features in the Nokia 3310 announced at MWC 2017.

Nokia 3310

1. New Design:

The new Nokia 3301 comes with a more refined design when compared to older 3310. While the company has made the new device a bit more funkier than the old one, they have retained the old style. The device is slimmer and also comes in 4 color options including Yellow, Red (both glossy), Blue and Grey (matte finish).

2. Camera:

While the old 3310 did not come with any camera (camera was not a feature of mobile phones back then), the new 3310 comes with 2MP rear camera along with an LED flash. While there isn’t anything to write about the camera as such, we are expecting this to be a decent camera for a feature phone. Also, the addition of a flash helps in low light photos.

3. Display:

The display on the new Nokia 3310 is a 2.4 inch QVGA color display compared to black and white one on the older 3310. The display also has curved window with polarized layer for better readability in sunlight.

4. Micro SD card Support:

Most of the features phones come with limited storage, but Nokia has managed to add a micro SD card support on the new 3310 which comes with 16MB of storage. The microSD card slot has support up to 32 GB.

5. Battery Life:

Nokia 3310 (2017) comes with a 1200mAh battery and company claims a battery life of 22 hours for talk time. The standby time is upto 31 days and music playback is 51 hours. The phone also comes with FM radio which can be played for 39 hours.

6. New UI:

Nokia 3310 comes with Nokia Series 30+ OS and has custom designed user interface brings a fresh look to a classic phone. The UI and icons definitely looks better than the original phone.

5 Things to Look for in new Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6

Nokia is officially back to making smartphones and they have announced three new devices at the MWC 2017. One of most awaited tech news has been rumors surrounding the Nokia phones. The company has launched three new mid-range phones, the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. While Nokia 6 was officially announced in China a few weeks back, now it will be available globally albeit some changes. While these three Nokia smartphones do not have any high-end hardware, there are a lot of things to look for in the new devices. In this article, we will have a look at 5 important aspects to look for in the new Nokia phones.

Nokia smartphones

1. Design and Build:

Nokia smartphones have been known for great design and build and this was evident even in older feature phones and also Windows Phones released by the company. Even with the new devices, the company is looking for premium looking smartphones in the mid-range segment. The Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 sports an aluminum unibody construction while Nokia 3 has aluminum chassis with polycarbonate rear panel. In terms of looks, all the three smartphones look good. Also, all the three phones come in a variety of color options (which are seldom found in mid-range phones).

So if you are a person for whom looks matter, definitely the new Nokia phones won’t disappoint.

Nokia-6_Beautyshot

2. Software:

When Nokia announced the Chinese variant of Nokia 6, it had a custom UI. But with the global devices, Nokia is providing stock or pure Android experience without any bloatware. If you look at budget segment most of the phones have custom UI. In a market like India, where most of the budget phones are dominated by Chinese players, it is difficult to get a stock like experience. So, if stock UI is your priority, then the new Nokia smartphones won’t disappoint.

Stock UI

3. Cameras:

Although Nokia smartphones have not been in production for a long time now, almost all of us remember the 41MP Nokia PureView camera smartphone which was one of the best cameras back then. The new Nokia smartphones do not come with any fancy specifications, we still think Nokia will do a good job with the cameras. The Nokia 6 comes with 16MP, Nokia 5 comes with 13MP and Nokia 3 comes with an 8MP camera. All the 3 phones have a front facing camera with auto focus. The low light experience of these phones is something to look for.

Nokia-5_Back

4. Display:

The new Nokia smartphones come with laminated IPS LCD panels with 2.5D curved Gorilla glass protection and with good sunlight readability. While the Nokia 6 comes with a Full HD display, the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 have HD panels.

5. Security and Future updates:

With the new Nokia smartphones, the company is promising to provide monthly security updates and also timely updates to the latest version of Android when Google releases them. This is something which is not offered by most of the budget smartphones and if Nokia can really provide it, this would make it superior to the software side.
