Amazon and Netflix made big Sundance plays and lost. Here's why

PARK CITY, Utah — Amazon Studios won’t be coming out of its first Sundance Film Festival with a sexy indie title to get the ball rolling on Amazon Original Movies. But they tried — and helped drive up the price on at least one — with a bid package that included details on its plans to put movies in theaters before quickly adding them to Prime.


Netflix, which has been at Sundance for a decade now, was also in the hunt, packing a sack of dough and high hopes to strike its first major feature-film deal here. Though Netflix offered the most cash for a big one — $5 million for the opening-night comedy The Bronze — they lost out to Relativity Media, which played a card the streaming giant doesn’t have: the promise of a robust theatrical release.
