Having grown up a fan of the Cardinals baseball team, a move to St. Louis has always tempted me. Learning about MAUHAUS just might cinch the deal.
MAUHAUS is a cat cafe and lounge. Well, it’s slated to become the first cafe in St. Louis where you can buy your coffee and baked goods and then take them to an adjoining lounge shared with cats. As a cat owner and coffee fiend, I’m hard pressed to think of a more delightful combination.
What’s more, as someone who works mostly out of his house, it’s hard for me to imagine getting half the writing done that I’ve finished without a purring/sleeping/meowing assistant in the room. Writers need to keep curious, sometimes be pulled away from the page to stay fresh, (yes, be cuddled) – and there’s no more fit companion for the trade than a cat. Just ask Papa Hemingway.
Beyond my personal affinities that make me enthusiastic over a project like MAUHAUS, it’s a wonderful example of a community endeavor. The plan is to partner with the local Tenth Life shelter, so that the cats roaming the lounge will also be available for adoption. The cafe will feature local baked goods.
I won’t play messenger here, but the reality for rescue cats is brutal in the U.S. Most cats go unseen in shelters and are then put down. MAUHAUS exposes cats to far more potential adopters than the typical shelter. So, it’s wonderful collaboration with the members of the community to help cats out and to give locals a unique cafe experience.
Not to mention, there are plenty of cat lovers who struggle to get their fix of cat time. People live in building with policies against pets. People have family members or friends with allergies, so can’t be around cats as often as they’d like. MAUHAUS gives them a place where they can mingle with plenty of cats.
