Find Out What All Your Appliances Are Saying (And How Much Energy They’re Using) With Sense

Today’s Killer Startup: Sense

Elevator Pitch:

Sense tracks energy usage in your home.

Why It’s A Killer Startup:

Electricity is one of those things that still kind of seems like magic, when you think about it. Like, do you really understand how it works? How it powers basically everything in your life? What it’s doing when you’re not paying attention? Sure, we all got the basics in high school science class, but let’s be real: you have no idea what’s really going on in those electrical wires.

And that ignorance can translate, at best, into higher utility bills and, at worst, fires when things malfunction. Sense, however, helps give you a better understanding of how much energy each appliance in your house is consuming as well exactly what they’re doing. So, for example, Sense can tell you how long you left the iron on or exactly when the dryer is done doing its job.

While you do need an electrician to install the Sense monitor (please don’t mess around with electrical mains on your own!), everything after that is super easy. Sense will tap into the electric currents and “listen” to each device that is using energy. It reports back to you on an app, in an easy-to-read list of each appliance. You’ll learn things like how much TV you’ve been watching, when you use the most energy, whether or not you left the garage door open, and just how much power that old-school iron is using up.

Sense is currently in pre-order, so if you’re interested in tracking just how much energy your home is consuming — and where — sign up to get one in their next round of production. Save money, and save the Earth while you’re at it. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
