Ubisoft is giving away Assassin’s Creed Unity on PC for one week from today (April 17). While this is good news for gamers, it’s happening because of a tragedy. Namely, the damage dealt out to Notre-Dame de Paris last week.
The Assassin’s Creed/Notre-Dame Connection
As you’re probably already aware, Notre-Dame de Paris, the medieval Catholic cathedral in the heart of Paris, France, has been badly damaged by fire. While the core structure of the building remains intact, the spire and most of the roof has collapsed in on itself.
Notre-Dame features heavily in Assassin’s Creed Unity, a game set during the French Revolution. With a major set-piece taking place inside the cathedral, Ubisoft Montreal recreated Notre-Dame in precise detail. And that has led Ubisoft to respond to the fire.
Ubisoft Loves Notre-Dame de Paris
In a post on Inside Ubisoft, the company has announced two things. First, Ubisoft will be “donating €500,000 to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral”. And secondly, it will be “giving Assassin’s Creed Unity away free on PC”.
In solidarity with everyone moved by Monday's events we’re donating to the restoration of Notre-Dame & giving you the chance to play @AssassinsCreed Unity on Uplay for free.
Details below:

This achieves two things. For one, it should help raise awareness of the fire, and the need to raise money to restore Notre-Dame back to its full glory. It also gives everyone “the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame”.
So, for one week from today, you can download Assassin’s Creed Unity for Uplay PC for free. And while the whole game is well worth playing, you should pay particularly close attention to the part that takes place inside Notre-Dame.
Assassin’s Creed Unity Lets You Pay Homage
Donations towards the reconstruction of Notre-Dame already top $1 billion, so it’s safe to say it will be restored. However, playing Assassin’s Creed Unity will give you the chance to experience Ubisoft’s “virtual homage to this monumental piece of architecture”.
If you’re new to the Assassin’s Creed series but want to play Unity because of the Notre-Dame connection, check out the history of Assassin’s Creed. Fittingly, it was written just after Unity was released in 2014, so remains unsullied by the games released since.
